For Professionals
This workshop addresses the important issues of youth suicide and violence. The workshop will provide clinicians with information regarding risk factors for youth suicide and violence, a conceptual model for understanding destructive and self-destructive behavior and the suicidal process, and some methods of assessment of suicidal risk and violent behavior.

Learning Objectives

Participants will:

  • develop an understanding of the core dynamics operating in children and adolescents at risk for suicide and/or violent behavior,
  • learn to identify negative thought patterns and attitudes in clients that influence suicidal, violent and/or self-destructive behavior, and
  • lean to plan effective crisis intervention and long-term streatment strategies, through the use of the individual case study approach.

For the General Public
Suicide is a public health issue and is the third leading cause of death for young adults. All communities can benefit from a better understanding of the causes of self-destructive and suicidal behavior. This workshop provides a framework for understanding the risk factors for suicide, the warning signs to look for in friends or family, and steps to take that can save lives.
