Dr. Stephen Porges is a developmental psychologist and neuroscientist who specializes in the neurobiology of social behavior. He is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Director of the Brain-Body Center in the College of Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and holds appointments in the Departments of Psychology, Bio-Engineering, and Anatomy and Cell Biology. Dr. Porges formed the Polyvagal Theory, a theory that links the evolution of the autonomic nervous system to the emergence of social behavior, which has stimulated research and treatments of a variety of psychiatric disorders including autism and trauma. Dr. Porges has served as President to both the Society for Psychophysiological Research and the Federation of Behavioral, Psychological and Cognitive Sciences. He was also a recipient of a National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Development Award.

In this DVD, Dr. Stephen Porges discusses his Polyvagal Theory, from its mammalian roots to its effffects on everyday life. He describes how people react on a neurobiological level to a variety of stimuli, ranging from negotiating safe places to traumatic events. Dr. Porges’ in-depth understanding of both neuroscience and social behavior offers a unique perspective on mental health.
